42 DISASTER RECOVERY JOURNAL | SUMMER 2016
According to a recent IDC report titled “DevOps and the Cost of Downtime: Fortune 1000 Best Practice Metrics Quantified,” the average total cost of unplanned appli- cation downtime for a Fortune 1000 company is between $1.25 and $2.5 billion per year. The cost of a failed critical application is between $500,000 and $1 million per hour.
Even if you’re not in the Fortune 1000, the cost of downtime is
steep – and rising. In 2016, Ponemon Institute surveyed 63 data
center organizations for its “2016 Cost of Data Center Outages”
report and found that unplanned downtime cost $8,851 per minute,
up from $7,908 per minute in 2013 – and the average cost of an
outage was $740,357, up from $690,204 in 2013.
