Project Management
Approach
The project management approach
helps establish the project strategy and
how the BCM project will be managed.
In some instances, the project management approach also outlines what project documentation is required and what
is exempt. This is different than the
documentation the project will produce
such as BCP, technology plans, and other
BCP program documents.
An established project management
approach helps build the foundations of
the project and incorporates all the areas
previously stated here. It basically tells
others how the BCM PM will be managing the project and what guideline and
standards the project team will be held
to. Renown management guru Peter
Drucker once said, “Efficiency is doing
things right, effectiveness is doing the
right things.” The project management
approach will help the PM in establishing what things need to be done.
Much of the practices stated here
may appear to be common sense and
logical in nature though if that
were the case, there wouldn’t
be so many failing projects. Considering that
the BCM project is
to ensure the corporation doesn’t
fail when a disaster strikes, it’s
imperative that
the project be
managed for success and managed
in a way that ensures
success.
BCM professionals can
benefit from taking basic project
management training to enable them
to complete successful projects. After
all, a corporation is dependant upon a
successful BCM project for without it,
the corporation may not be able to prepare for or respond to a major disaster.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Establishing an
Effective BC Program
Steering Committee

Business continuity profession- als work in a 360° environment and manage in “matrix mode” in order to implement new initiatives to make their organizations more
resilient. Throughout that, one of the big-
gest challenges is managing executive
stakeholders as they hold the key to suc-

a blueprint for successful BCP leader-
ship as it leveraged their most senior-level
executives to ensure commitment at the
functional levels. Their BCP Program
was initiated quickly and effectively, is
well-maintained, and continues to expand
scope every year.
Identify all Stakeholders and
ensure the BCP Steering
Committee can Represent Them
Some elements of good management
truly sound elementary. Sometimes the
fact that they are so elementary is one
reason that they can be overlooked. When
embarking upon a BCP initiative it is
essential to understand all stakeholders
impacted – from those who will be truly
critical for business function or technology subject matter expertise, to those who
